Concentration and patience — our friends hard at work learning loom knitting during the inclusive beanie workshop
At Friends of the Disabled Society (FDS), every workshop is more than just about learning a craft — it’s about discovery, joy, and community. Our recent inclusive beanie workshop in Singapore, held over two Wednesdays, was a wonderful example of how creativity can bring people together.
Across both sessions, our friends learned how to use a loom to knit their very own beanies. Loop by loop, yarn was carefully wrapped, pulled through, and shaped into something practical and warm. For many, this was their very first attempt at loom knitting, and the sense of achievement when the beanies came together was written all over their faces. What started as a simple ball of yarn transformed into a symbol of patience, effort, and pride.
But what stood out the most wasn’t just the finished beanies — it was the process. The room was filled with laughter, small words of encouragement, and moments of teamwork as friends helped each other along. Each completed beanie wasn’t only something to wear, but a reminder of the confidence that grows when we try something new.

As one participant happily shared, “Wah, I really made a beanie with my own hands leh!” That spark of joy captures exactly why workshops like this matter — they prove that with the right tools, guidance, and encouragement, everyone has the ability to create something meaningful.
The best part is that this workshop doesn’t stop here. Our inclusive beanie making workshop is also available for corporate CSR programmes and school learning journeys. It’s a unique, hands-on way for companies and students to step into the world of inclusive creativity — while building empathy, patience, and teamwork along the way.
At FDS, we believe creativity has the power to connect people across abilities. And as our friends proudly wore the beanies they had made, one thing was clear — this wasn’t just about keeping warm. It was about carrying the warmth of achievement, community, and shared joy.
